This project studies the literary translation flows between francophone Belgium and Flanders in the period 1970-2020. We examine the link between intra-Belgian cultural transfers and the mutual knowledge and perception of each other’s culture in a period of increasing federalization of the state. We explore whether the gap between Dutch-speaking and French-speaking Belgium as constructed in the political discourse corresponds with cultural practice. We do so by a quantitative mapping of the translations of four distinct types of literary production: poetry in literary journals and theatre. For each of these types, we then first examine which actors and institutions have played a role in the translation. Translation sociology will allow us to write profiles of the actors involved, whereas insights from the translation policy approach will guide our analysis of the institutions. This phase also includes visualizations of the findings. Next, we study the reception of this literature in translation from the other part of the country. A mixed approach of collecting reviews, archival work, and surveys and interviews will provide the data for analysing both the professional (critics) and public (readers, audience) reception and perception. Finally, we will make the link between our findings and the cultural and social developments in Belgium since 1970.

Dit project bestudeert de literaire vertaalstromen tussen Franstalig België en Vlaanderen in de periode 1970-2020. We onderzoeken het verband tussen intra-Belgische culturele transfers en de wederzijdse kennis en perceptie van elkaars cultuur in een periode van toenemende federalisering van de staat. We onderzoeken of de kloof tussen Nederlandstalig en Franstalig België zoals die in het politieke discours is geconstrueerd, overeenstemt met de culturele praktijk. Dat doen we door de vertalingen van twee verschillende soorten literaire producten kwantitatief in kaart te brengen: poëzie in literaire tijdschriften en theater. Voor elk van deze types onderzoeken we welke actoren en instellingen een rol hebben gespeeld in de vertaling. Met behulp van de vertaalsociologie gaan we profielen van de betrokken actoren schrijven, terwijl concepten rond vertaalbeleid onze analyse van de instellingen zullen sturen. In deze fase worden de bevindingen ook gevisualiseerd. Vervolgens bestuderen we de receptie van deze vertaalde literatuur uit het andere deel van het land. Een gemengde aanpak waarbij recensies, archiefstukken, en enquêtes en interviews worden bijeengebracht, zal de gegevens opleveren voor de analyse van zowel de professionele (critici) als de publieke (lezers, publiek) receptie en perceptie. Ten slotte leggen we de link tussen onze bevindingen en de culturele en maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen in België sinds 1970.
